3D Printing New BMW Floor Plugs

Chris Arter Published 1 min

I'm currently restoring a 1998 BMW Z3 (Exclusive Edition in Dakar Yellow, one of 300 💅). Unfortunately, the rear window was left open by the previous owner and the weather got into the car for literal years. By some miracle, it has zero rust anywhere on the frame. But, it has plenty of odor.

The carpets, I’m afraid, are a complete write-off. There’s also smell in the sound deadening material itself that probably sat in water for years. So, time to pull it all up. But, in doing so, I noticed these floor plugs are almost completely rotted from time.

Lucky for me, I have a 3D printer, some TPU material and a caliper. So I decided to see if I could print some replacements myself.

After printing a couple quick dimensional tests in PLA, I tweaked the model and printed in TPU.

And, it worked!
